How to Import a Wallet into MetaMask – Seed Phrase and Private Key Guide

· 14 min read
Detailed guide on importing an existing wallet into MetaMask using a seed phrase or private key, covering device migration, wallet recovery, and multi-device sync.

If you already have a crypto wallet with a saved seed phrase or private key, you can easily import it into MetaMask. Whether you're switching devices, migrating from another wallet, or syncing across multiple devices, the import function helps you quickly restore your wallet. This article covers the two main wallet import methods in detail.

When Do You Need to Import a Wallet?

These common scenarios require MetaMask's wallet import feature:

  1. Switching computers or phones: Restoring your wallet on a new device
  2. Reinstalling MetaMask: After uninstalling and reinstalling
  3. Migrating from other wallets: Importing Trust Wallet, imToken, or other wallet accounts into MetaMask
  4. Multi-device sync: Using the same wallet on multiple computers or phones
  5. Forgotten unlock password: Resetting the password and restoring your wallet via seed phrase

How to Import a Wallet Using a Seed Phrase?

Seed phrase import is the most complete recovery method, restoring all accounts under that seed phrase.

Step 1: Open MetaMask

After installing MetaMask, on the welcome page select "Import an existing wallet." If MetaMask already has another wallet, you'll need to lock or reset it first in settings.

Step 2: Enter the Seed Phrase

Enter your 12 (or 24) seed phrase words in the correct order, separated by spaces. Pay attention to:

  • All words must be lowercase
  • Word order must be exactly correct
  • Check for spelling errors
  • Don't add extra spaces or special characters

Step 3: Set a New Password

After entering the seed phrase, you'll be asked to set a new unlock password. This password is used only on the current device and can differ from passwords on other devices.

Step 4: Complete the Import

Click "Import" and MetaMask will recover your wallet from the seed phrase. Once complete, you'll see your wallet address and balance.

Step 5: Recover Additional Accounts

If you previously created multiple accounts under the same seed phrase, only the first account appears after import. To recover others, click the avatar in the upper right, select "Create account," and the system will sequentially restore previously created accounts.

How to Import an Account Using a Private Key?

Private key import only imports a single account — useful for adding a specific account from another source to your existing MetaMask.

Process

  1. Open your existing MetaMask wallet
  2. Click the round avatar in the upper right
  3. Select "Import account"
  4. Choose "Private Key" from the type dropdown
  5. Paste your private key (a 64-character hex string starting with 0x)
  6. Click "Import"

Once imported, the account appears in your account list marked as "Imported." Note: Private key-imported accounts are not protected by the current seed phrase. If you reset MetaMask and restore with the seed phrase, this imported account won't automatically recover — you'll need the private key again.

What to Know When Migrating from Other Wallets?

Some details to be aware of when migrating between wallets:

Trust Wallet to MetaMask:

  • Trust Wallet seed phrases are usually 12 words and can be directly imported into MetaMask
  • Due to different address derivation paths, ETH addresses are usually consistent, but addresses for other chains may differ

imToken to MetaMask:

  • imToken seed phrases can also be imported into MetaMask
  • Verify that the ETH address matches after import

Hardware Wallet with MetaMask:

  • Ledger and Trezor can be used with MetaMask via "Connect Hardware Wallet"
  • This method doesn't require importing the seed phrase or private key, making it more secure

What If Balance Doesn't Show After Import?

If the balance shows as 0 or tokens don't appear after import, don't panic — assets are still safe. Possible causes and solutions:

  1. Wrong network selected: Check if MetaMask is connected to the right network (e.g., your assets are on BSC but MetaMask is on Ethereum mainnet)
  2. Token not added: Non-native tokens need to be manually added — click "Import tokens" and enter the contract address
  3. Network sync delay: Wait a few minutes for MetaMask to sync on-chain data
  4. Address mismatch: Verify the imported address matches your original address

Safety Tips

Keep these security points in mind when importing a wallet:

  1. Operate in a secure environment: Ensure the device is free of malware — don't import wallets on public computers
  2. Never enter seed phrases on web pages: MetaMask only asks for seed phrases in its own interface — any webpage requesting one is phishing
  3. Verify MetaMask is genuine: Confirm your MetaMask installation is from an official source before importing
  4. Clear clipboard after using a private key: If you pasted a private key, clear the clipboard immediately after
  5. Verify the address after import: Confirm the displayed address exactly matches what you expected
  6. Don't import on untrusted devices: Every import leaves wallet data on that device

What's the difference between seed phrase and private key import?

A seed phrase restores the entire wallet and all derived accounts — it's the complete recovery method. A private key only imports one specific account. If you have a seed phrase, prefer using it.

Will importing on a new device affect the wallet on my old device?

No. Importing on a new device doesn't affect MetaMask on the original device. Both devices can use the same wallet simultaneously, with data synced via the blockchain.

Can I import a 24-word seed phrase into MetaMask?

Yes. MetaMask supports both 12-word and 24-word seed phrases (BIP-39 standard). Just enter all 24 words on the import page — the process is identical.

What if import says the seed phrase is invalid?

Check these points: spelling accuracy (watch for similar words like "abandon" and "about"), correct word order, no extra spaces or special characters, and that the seed phrase is in BIP-39 standard format.

Can I import an exchange account into MetaMask?

No. Binance (Android users download the Binance App, iOS users refer to the iOS installation guide) and other exchanges use custodial accounts without user-accessible private keys or seed phrases. You need to withdraw from the exchange to your MetaMask address instead. They are entirely different account systems.
