How to Use a Ledger Wallet - Complete Hardware Wallet Guide

· 8 min read
A detailed guide on using Ledger hardware wallets, including initialization, installing apps, sending/receiving assets, and connecting to MetaMask.

Ledger is the world's top-selling hardware wallet brand. Its Ledger Nano S Plus and Nano X are benchmarks for crypto cold storage. Hardware wallets store private keys in a secure chip — even if the connected computer has malware, the keys won't leak.

Ledger Models

  • Ledger Nano S Plus: Entry-level, USB-C, ~$79, supports 5,500+ tokens
  • Ledger Nano X: Flagship, Bluetooth for mobile, built-in battery, ~$149
  • Ledger Stax: Latest, touchscreen, ~$279

For most users, Nano S Plus is sufficient. For mobile operation, choose the Bluetooth-enabled Nano X.

Initialization Steps

Step 1: Unboxing Check

Check packaging integrity. Authentic Ledger has anti-tamper stickers — don't use if compromised.

Step 2: Download Ledger Live

Official management software for Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile. Download from ledger.com/ledger-live.

Step 3: Device Initialization

  1. Connect Ledger via USB
  2. Select "Set up as new device"
  3. Set PIN code (4–8 digits)
  4. PIN is used to unlock the device each time

Step 4: Record Recovery Phrase

The device displays a 24-word recovery phrase:

  1. Words shown one by one on device screen
  2. Record on the included recovery phrase card
  3. Device asks you to confirm certain words
  4. Initialization complete after correct confirmation

Critical: These 24 words are the only way to recover assets. Store them securely.

Installing Crypto Apps

Ledger uses an app architecture — each cryptocurrency needs its own app:

  1. Open Ledger Live → Manager
  2. Confirm manager access on device
  3. Search for the cryptocurrency app (Bitcoin, Ethereum)
  4. Click Install

Nano S Plus can hold ~100 apps simultaneously.

Receiving Assets

  1. Open Ledger Live → Receive
  2. Select the crypto account
  3. Ledger Live shows the receiving address
  4. Important: Verify the address matches on the Ledger device screen
  5. Copy address
  6. Send from Binance or another wallet

Verifying on-device is crucial — even if malware changes the displayed address on your computer, the Ledger device always shows the correct one.

Sending Assets

  1. Open Ledger Live → Send
  2. Select account, enter recipient address and amount
  3. Confirm gas settings
  4. Confirm transaction details on Ledger device (address, amount, fees)
  5. Press confirm button on device

All outgoing transactions require physical confirmation on the Ledger device.

Connecting Ledger to MetaMask

  1. Ensure Ledger is unlocked with Ethereum App open
  2. Enable "Blind signing" in the Ethereum App settings
  3. In MetaMask, click "Connect Hardware Wallet"
  4. Select "Ledger" and choose connection method (USB/Bluetooth)
  5. Select your Ledger account
  6. Connection complete — DApp transactions require Ledger confirmation

Security Reminders

  1. Buy only from official site: ledger.com is the only official source
  2. Check packaging integrity: Verify anti-tamper stickers
  3. Set your own PIN and seed phrase: Pre-set PIN/seed = tampered device
  4. Verify addresses on device: Always confirm on Ledger screen for both sends and receives
  5. 24 words never go online: Never enter seed phrase into any computer or phone
  6. Update firmware: Regularly update via Ledger Live for security patches

What If I Lose My Ledger?

With your 24-word recovery phrase, buy a new Ledger and restore. You can also import into MetaMask for emergency access (reduces security).

Does Ledger Need to Stay Connected?

No. Only connect when checking balances, sending/receiving, or managing apps. Assets exist on the blockchain, not in the device.

Does Ledger Support NFTs?

Yes. Latest Ledger Live manages Ethereum and Polygon NFTs. Via MetaMask, use OpenSea and other NFT markets with Ledger signing.

Ledger Battery Life?

Nano S Plus has no battery (USB-powered). Nano X lasts ~8 hours on full charge. Binance Official App (Apple users, refer to the iOS Installation Guide) connects to Nano X via Bluetooth.
