How to Use Etherscan - Check Transactions, Addresses, and Contracts

· 12 min read
A detailed guide on using the Etherscan blockchain explorer, including querying transactions, checking address balances, verifying contracts, and tracking tokens.

Etherscan is the most widely used explorer tool on the Ethereum blockchain. You can query any address's balance and transaction history, track transaction status, view smart contract code, verify token information, and more. All on-chain data is publicly transparent — you don't need to log in to query anything. Before performing on-chain operations, it's recommended to prepare assets on Binance's official website, and download the Binance app, Apple users can refer to the iOS installation guide to monitor transactions anytime.

How to Check Transaction Status on Etherscan?

After initiating an on-chain transaction, you can track its status through the Transaction Hash (TxHash) on Etherscan:

  1. Open etherscan.io
  2. Paste the transaction hash (a long string starting with 0x) in the search bar
  3. Press Enter to query

The transaction detail page displays the following key information:

  • Status: Transaction status — Success, Failed, or Pending
  • Block: The block number where the transaction was included
  • From: The address that initiated the transaction
  • To: The receiving address or contract address
  • Value: The amount of ETH transferred
  • Transaction Fee: The actual gas fee paid
  • Gas Price: The gas unit price of the transaction

If the status is Pending, the transaction is still queued waiting to be included in a block — just be patient. If it stays Pending for a long time, you may need to speed up or cancel the transaction.

How to View All Assets at an Address?

Enter any Ethereum address (42-character string starting with 0x) in the search bar to view complete information:

  • Overview tab: Displays ETH balance and total asset value
  • Transactions tab: All ETH transfer records
  • Internal Txns tab: Transactions from internal smart contract calls
  • Token Transfers tab: All ERC-20 token transfer records
  • NFTs tab: List of NFTs held by the address

This feature is very useful — you can:

  • Verify a recipient's address before transferring
  • Monitor all transaction history of your own wallet
  • View whale addresses' holdings and activities
  • Verify a project team's fund flows

How to Verify Smart Contracts on Etherscan?

Smart contract security is crucial. Etherscan provides contract verification features:

  1. Enter the contract address in the search bar
  2. Click the "Contract" tab
  3. Check the following key information:
    • Is it Verified: A green checkmark means the code is open-source
    • Source Code: The open-source contract code — you can read the specific logic
    • Read Contract: Read-only functions to query contract state
    • Write Contract: Write functions to interact with the contract

References for judging contract trustworthiness:

  • Has the code been audited by third parties
  • Whether there's a Proxy contract (proxy pattern may carry upgrade risks)
  • Whether the contract owner is a multisig address
  • Contract creation time and interaction count

What Other Useful Features Does Etherscan Have?

Gas Tracker

Visit etherscan.io/gastracker to view current gas fee levels, divided into Low, Average, and High tiers, helping you choose the right time to transact.

Token Lookup

Search any ERC-20 token to view: number of holders, total supply, contract address, price trends, etc. This is very helpful for evaluating whether a token is legitimate.

Address Labels

Etherscan adds labels to known addresses, such as "Binance", "Uniswap", etc. This helps you quickly identify fund sources and destinations.

Token Approval Checker

Visit etherscan.io/tokenapprovalchecker to view all token approvals for an address, and revoke unsafe approvals promptly.

What Other Blockchain Explorers Are There?

Different blockchains have their own explorers:

Blockchain Explorer URL
BSC BscScan bscscan.com
Polygon PolygonScan polygonscan.com
Arbitrum Arbiscan arbiscan.io
Optimism Optimistic Etherscan optimistic.etherscan.io
Solana Solscan solscan.io
Avalanche Snowtrace snowtrace.io

These explorers work essentially the same way as Etherscan — master Etherscan, and you can easily use the others.

FAQ

Can Data on Etherscan Be Faked?

Etherscan reads real data from the blockchain, which cannot be tampered with. However, Etherscan's own labeling system and price data may have delays or errors.

Why Can't I Find My Transaction on Etherscan?

Possible reasons: the transaction hasn't been broadcast to the network yet, the transaction hash was entered incorrectly, or the transaction is on a different chain (e.g., BSC instead of Ethereum).

Does Etherscan Expose My Privacy?

Blockchain addresses are inherently anonymous, but all your transaction records are visible to anyone. If someone knows your address, they can track all your operations and assets.

Can I Trade Directly on Etherscan?

Etherscan itself is not a trading platform, but you can interact directly with smart contracts through the "Write Contract" feature on contract pages. This requires connecting a wallet and some technical knowledge.

Does Etherscan Cost Money?

Basic features are completely free. Etherscan also offers paid API services, primarily for developers and enterprise users.

Security Reminders

  • Make sure you're visiting the official etherscan.io website
  • Don't casually interact with unknown contracts through Etherscan's Write Contract feature
  • Regularly use Token Approval Checker to review approval status
  • After withdrawing from Binance's official website, use Etherscan to confirm whether the transaction was successful
  • Never enter private keys or seed phrases on Etherscan — the official site will never ask for these
  • If you discover suspicious transactions, investigate the source promptly and transfer assets to a new address if necessary
